January 4, 2011 – March 1, 2016: In a retrospect

January 4, 2011: Ghazi Malik Mumtaz Hussain Qadri assassinated governor Punjab for comitting blasphemy and enjoying exemption from legal proceedings. Ghazi Malik Mumtaz Qadri surrendered and was arrested on spot.

January 5, 2011: People tossed petals on Mumtaz Qadri’s arrival to anti-terrorism court. 200 lawyers of Islamabad Bar Council (IBC) offered to represent him pro bono. Moreover, people in various cities protested demanding immediate acquittal of Ghazi Malik Mumtaz Qadri.

January 6, 2011: Mumtaz Qadri accused investigation team of torturing him. ATC ordered checkup from PIMS. Police presented a masqueraded person before court for security reasons. Ghazi Malik Mumtaz Qadri was to be presented before court transferring it to Islamabad. Rawalpindi bar surrounded the court preventing the transfer.

January 7, 2011: Qadri’s father and brothers acquitted. Cheif Rawalpindi police and two inspectors suspended.

January 10,2011: Ghazi Malik Mumtaz Qadri transferred to Adiala Jail.

January 11, 2011: Trial started in Adiala Jail.

October 1, 2011: Judge Syed Pervaz Ali Shah observed Ghazi Malik Mumtaz Qadri as guilty of murder under section 382 of constitution and 7ATA. He sentenced Malik Mumtaz Qadri death sentence 2 times along with a fine of 0.2 millions PKR. Ghazi Malik Mumtaz Qadri transferred to death cell. No lawyer of either side was present in the court.

October 6, 2011: Ghazi’s lawyers filed a review petition in Islamabad High Court (IHC) seeking quash of punishment. Another review petition was filed to declare inclusion of 7ATA in FIR as void.

October 25, 2011: BBC reported the flee of aforementioned judge to Saudia Arabia. According to report, government’s lawyer Siaf ul Malook, said the government had fleed the judge amid death threats.

February 11, 2015: Two member-ed bench of IHC, comprising of Justice Noor ul Haque Qureshi and Justice Shaukat Siddiqui, reserved the judgment after conclusion of arguments from both sides.

March 9, 2015: IHC upholded the death sentence under section 382 and accepted appeal to void 7 ATA. Lawyers decided to file a review petition in Supreme Court (SC).

October 7, 2015: Supreme Court (bench comprising of Justice Dost Muhammad Khan and Justice Asif Saeed Khosa) upheld the Qadri’s death sentence and included section 7 ATA again (on a review from government against IHC decision) denouncing Ghazi as terrorist.

January 19, 2016: Ghazi Malik Mumtaz Qadri appeal state to reconsider the case and quash his punishment on Islamic grounds.

February 22, 2016: Security tightened across the country amid president’s decision ahed.

February 29, 2016: Ghazi Malik Mumtaz Qadri RA executed after rejection appeal by president

March 1, 2016: More than 6 Million people attended funeral of Ghazi Malik Mumtaz Qadri
